Pop Up Urban Spaces – Facilitating shift towards active forms of mobility with the use of tactical urbanism
IPoP is participating in the European project PopUpUrbanSpaces, which uses tactical urbanism to promote active mobility and create a more pleasant urban environment with fewer cars. We are part of this international partnership as an expert institution that supports partners in planning pilot projects in tactical urbanism and space creation.

In March 2023 IPoP became part of the three-year project PopUpUrbanSpaces – Facilitating shift towards active forms of mobility by changing residents’ attitude and travel behaviour through the use of green, low-cost tactical urbanism and placemaking solutions.
PopUpUrbanSpaces helps solve the problems of the public sector and similar entities in the FUAs resulting from car-oriented mobility. The project addresses the common challenge of high car ownership and traffic in cities, which is associated with numerous issues such as traffic jams, air pollution, and high CO2 emissions, impacting not only urban environments but also people’s health.
The project applies a “show and tell” approach to raise awareness on the issue. The main elements of the project include capacity building of public sector employees through tactical urban/transport solutions, placemaking, and digital awareness methods; actively involving citizens in testing tactical urban/transport approaches; engaging citizens through innovative digital technologies; establishing urban-rural partnerships; cross-border connections and exchange of experiences; and preparing solutions and recommendations for policymakers.
IPoP – Institute for Spatial Policies is involved as an expert institution providing knowledge in the field of tactical urbanism and placemaking.
