Supporting local communities in placemaking

Outdoors supports Ljubljana residents in turning their ideas for better neighbourhoods into small, tangible improvements to public space.
Local communities are invited to propose simple outdoor actions that they could carry out together – from creating new meeting places and planting greenery to organising activities that bring neighbours together. Selected groups received funding for materials, as well as expert advice and mentoring throughout the process.
By giving residents the resources and confidence to shape the places they know best, the project demonstrates how small, community-led interventions can strengthen local connections, encourage people to spend more time outdoors and make neighbourhoods more welcoming and lively.
Outdoors was initiated in 2019 by Prostorož and IPoP – Institute for Spatial Policies, with the support of the City of Ljubljana. Zunaj has been inspired by similar foreign mechanisms such as Grätzl Oaze Wien, Neighbourhood Matching Fund Seattle.
